PETALING JAYA: The race for Johor is officially under way, with nomination day setting up a fierce contest among candidates for the state’s 56 seats.

According to the names listed on the Election Commission's (EC) website, a total of 172 candidates will be squaring off in the election, with polling day on July 11.

The EC’s official list shows Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional each contesting in all 56 seats, while the Perikatan Nasional coalition has fielded candidates in 33 seats.

The polls will also feature other parties like Parti Bersama Malaysia in 15 seats, Muda in four seats and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) in one seat, namely Skudai.

The Parti Orang Asli Malaysia (Asli) has fielded one candidate in the Endau seat.

A total of six independent candidates also joined in the fray, based on the nomination list.

Meanwhile, the biggest multi-cornered fight will be in three seats - Bukit Naning, Puteri Wangsa and Bukit Batu. 

Each of these seats will have five candidates battling it out to win over voters.

The Johor polls will see various multi-cornered fights, given the flurry of political developments that have happened leading up to the election.

Among the multi-cornered fights in Johor, the most common are three-way contests, with 27 constituencies facing such a situation.

 

 

Before the state assembly was dissolved for the polls, Barisan Nasional made up the majority with 40 seats, followed by Pakatan Harapan with 12 seats.
