Police in Australia are investigating pop star Katy Perry over allegations of an alleged sexual assault, several Australian media outlets reported on Wednesday, citing authorities in the state of Victoria.

Broadcasters ABC and 9News cited Victoria police as saying their investigations concerned "a historical sexual assault that occurred in Melbourne in 2010."

Australian actress Ruby Rose, 40, wrote in a now-deleted post on the social media platform Threads that the alleged assault took place at a nightclub in Melbourne when she was in her early 20s.

Perry has vehemently denied the allegations. The singer's team said in a statement seen by US media that Rose's claims were "not only categorically false, they are dangerous, reckless lies."

In a post late on Tuesday, Rose wrote that she had completed her statements to police. "This means I am no longer able to comment, repost, or talk publicly about any of those cases, or the individuals involved," she wrote.

Rose has lived openly as a lesbian since she was 13. She appeared in the TV series Orange Is The New Black and in films such as John Wick: Chapter 2, Pitch Perfect 3 and The Meg.

Perry, known for pop hits such as Firework and Teenage Dream, is in a relationship with former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau.

Last year, she made headlines after joining an all-female crew that flew to the edge of space onboard a Blue Origin spaceship. - dpa
