HIDDEN in between the high-rise towers of Kuala Lumpur City Centre is an eatery serving Malay dishes.

Fauziah Mohd Zin, a 65-year-old single mother of four, started Warong Fauziah in 1987 after falling on hard times.

“My children were still very young at the time and with our expenses, I wasn’t earning enough to get us by,” she recalled.

“I started operating on Jalan P. Ramlee but I had to relocate when plans to develop a building on the land were announced.

“I was told to move to Jalan Mayang when it was still surrounded by undeveloped land, and have been here ever since,” she said.

Serving more than 30 dishes that change daily, Warong Fauziah is largely frequented by office workers working nearby.

Upon arrival, customers are greeted by the aroma and vibrant spread of freshly cooked dishes.

In the morning, customers can enjoy Malaysian staples like nasi lemak and lontong, as well as familiar favourites like macaroni.

“The customer-favourite is the chicken rice and a close second is the fried chicken,” said Fauziah.

“Customers seem to love my fried chicken.”

The chicken rice features tender, boiled-then-fried chicken paired with soft, fragrant rice that makes the dish comforting.

The hot fried chicken is flavoured by bold, aromatic spices and has crispy edges.

Both offer distinct takes on classic Malaysian flavours.

Those planning to visit the eatery should be mindful of the busy 7am to 7.30am slot when workers grab a quick bite before they start work.

Another peak period is the lunch hour which starts as early as 12pm.

Fauziah recalled how challenging it was in the beginning.

“Back then, all these office buildings were on the rise and more people were coming into the area, but the competition was equally tough.

“Every building had a food court with trendy eateries, so I was forced to upgrade my menu to appeal to the younger generation,” she said.

She also made sure her food remained affordable.

“I have to keep the prices reasonable. I understand the need for meals people can afford to have every day.”

With dishes like nasi campur, ayam penyet, masak lemak nenas and squid, the stall delivers a flavourful fusion of modern Malay cooking and nostalgic kampung comfort, all at wallet-friendly prices.

Warong Fauziah opens daily from 7am to 3.30pm, except on weekends.

It is located on Jalan Mayang, at the end of a small pathway across from Star Residence.

Free parking is also available beside the eatery.
